More than twenty WordPress plugins now ship an MCP server. This guide compares the ones most sites will choose between, by approach, adoption, authentication and guardrails, using each project's own documentation and WordPress.org figures from 30 October 2026. We have not benchmarked them head to head; where an independent test exists, we link it.
Installs are WordPress.org active installs on 30 October 2026. Descriptions summarise each plugin’s own listing. WPOS is our product; it isn’t distributed through WordPress.org.
| Plugin | From | Installs | What it is | Consider it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WPVibe | SeedProd | 100,000+ | MCP server for content, themes and settings, with approvals | You want a widely used option with an approval step |
| AI Engine | Meow Apps | 90,000+ | AI chatbot, content tools and a built-in MCP server | You also want a chatbot and content tools in one plugin |
| MCP Adapter | WordPress project | 60,000+ | The official bridge from the Abilities API to MCP | You want the open, standard route |
| Easy MCP AI | Themeisle | 30,000+ | Free MCP server with 280+ tools, including WooCommerce, SEO and GA4 | You need store and analytics tools without paying |
| Royal MCP | Royal Plugins | 10,000+ | 250+ tools with OAuth 2.0 and WebMCP, fully self-hosted | You want OAuth and nothing routed through a vendor |
| Secure MCP Server | miniOrange | 8,000+ | 400+ tools, including WooCommerce, SEO and Elementor, built around security | Security review is your first filter |
| Enable Abilities for MCP | Fabio Montenegro | 5,000+ | 112 abilities for content, SEO, WooCommerce, FSE and LMS; free and self-hosted | You want a large free set of abilities |
| Agent Abilities for MCP | Unaib Amir | 800+ | Limited access, read-only mode, drafts you approve and an audit log | Governance matters more than tool count |
| Jetpack (WordPress.com MCP) | Automattic | 3M+ (all Jetpack sites) | Self-hosted sites connect to WordPress.com’s hosted MCP server | You already run Jetpack |
| WPOS (our product) | WPOS | — | Exposes the tools of WPOS’s built-in agent over MCP across a workspace of client sites; native Gutenberg, Elementor and Divi builds; per-page backups | You run many client sites and want to drive them from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex |
The most-installed MCP plugin on WordPress.org, at 100,000+ active installs. Its listing describes an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other clients that manages content, themes and settings, with approvals. InstaWP’s hands-on test describes it as a hosted relay with native Elementor support.
A long-running AI toolkit with 90,000+ active installs and more than 870 ratings. It combines a chatbot, content tools and an MCP server, so it suits sites that want an on-site assistant and agent access from the same plugin.
The official bridge between the Abilities API and MCP, at version 0.7.1 with 60,000+ active installs. It exposes only abilities that core and your plugins register and mark public, which makes it the most predictable option and the least capable out of the box. Our Abilities API guide shows how to add your own.
A free MCP server with 280+ tools covering WooCommerce, SEO and GA4. Themeisle’s listing stresses that it never sees your data, and InstaWP’s test rated it best for everyday guardrails.
250+ tools with OAuth 2.0 and WebMCP, fully self-hosted. InstaWP’s test singled out its undo capability.
From a security-tools company, with 400+ tools spanning WooCommerce, SEO and Elementor. InstaWP’s test highlights its OAuth 2.1 focus.
Self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack use WordPress.com’s hosted MCP server, with OAuth 2.1, read and write tools and a read-only setting. If a site already runs Jetpack, this adds the least new software.
Not a WordPress.org plugin, and not only an MCP server: WPOS is an agent and workspace for client sites that also speaks MCP. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or any MCP client can drive the same tools as WPOS’s built-in agent, including native Gutenberg, Elementor and Divi builds, media, users, SEO, WooCommerce and read-only inspection, with per-page backups and widget revisions. Your own agent doesn’t spend WPOS credits.
Page layouts need builder-aware tools. Two options stand out: The Plus Addons for Elementor from POSIMYTH, which InstaWP’s test rated best for one-call Elementor pages, and Elementor Ultra, an open-source project from the WPOS team with about 90 Elementor 4 tools and a JSX compiler for native, editable pages.
An MCP plugin gives one agent tools on one site. Running a client book is a different problem. Agencies need every client site in one place, builds that land natively in each site’s builder, conventions applied the same way on site one and site forty, a check that the result renders before anyone calls it done, and a handoff the client sees under the agency’s brand.
That is the job WPOS is built for: an agent and workspace that works inside wp-admin on each client site, on the hosting the client already has, and that also speaks MCP, so your developers can drive the same sites from Claude Code, Cursor or Codex. You can try it free for 30 days on a site you already manage.
There is no single best one. WPVibe and AI Engine are the most installed, Easy MCP AI is free with a large toolset, Royal MCP and miniOrange lead on self-hosting and security, and the official MCP Adapter is the standard route. Choose on authentication and guardrails first.
It is more predictable, because it exposes only abilities that are registered and marked public. It is also less capable out of the box. Many sites pair it with plugins that register abilities, or use an MCP plugin instead.
They are as safe as the access you give them. Connect as a dedicated user with limited capabilities, start read-only, use OAuth or application passwords you can revoke, and keep a person approving client-facing changes.
Most list Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, and any MCP-compliant client should work. Check each plugin's documentation for the exact connection steps per client.
Fewer than most plugins offer. A small set of well-scoped tools tied to a dedicated user is easier to review and harder to misuse than hundreds of tools with admin rights.
Yes. WPOS speaks MCP, so your own Claude Code, Cursor or Codex can drive the same tools as WPOS's built-in agent across the sites in your workspace, without spending WPOS credits. It isn't a WordPress.org plugin; it's an agent and workspace for running client sites. Its team also maintains Elementor Ultra, an open-source MCP server for Elementor 4 builds.
WPOS is built for the second. Free for 30 days: 5,000 credits, a live site plus a sandbox, no card.
